How many 40 lb, 60 lb, and 80 lb bags of concrete you need — per cubic yard, per cubic foot, and for common project volumes.
Bag Yields at a Glance
| Bag size | Yield per bag | Bags per cubic foot | Bags per cubic yard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 lb | 0.60 ft³ | 1.7 | 45 |
| 60 lb | 0.45 ft³ | 2.2 | 60 |
| 40 lb | 0.30 ft³ | 3.3 | 90 |
Bags Needed by Total Volume
| Concrete volume | 80 lb bags | 60 lb bags | 40 lb bags |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.25 yd³ (6.75 ft³) | 12 | 15 | 23 |
| 0.50 yd³ (13.5 ft³) | 23 | 30 | 45 |
| 0.75 yd³ (20.3 ft³) | 34 | 45 | 68 |
| 1 yd³ (27 ft³) | 45 | 60 | 90 |
| 1.5 yd³ (40.5 ft³) | 68 | 90 | 135 |
| 2 yd³ (54 ft³) | 90 | 120 | 180 |
The Quick Formula
Bags = total volume (ft³) ÷ bag yield (ft³), then round up.
Bags = Volume ÷ Yield × 1.10 (waste)Bags vs Ready-Mix
Bags win under ~2 yd³ and for tight-access or DIY pours. Above ~2 yd³, ready-mix usually saves labor and time.
Always verify: yields vary by brand and mix (fast-setting, fiber-reinforced, high-early-strength). Check the cubic-foot output printed on your product bag before ordering.
